Acupuncture Introduction Acupuncture is a form of treatment that has withstood the test of time for over some 4,500 years. This treatment in which some of the various applications used were flint or sharp pieces of wood, progressed to the use of needles. These were introduced into the skin of the body and the auricle (ear), to help with various types of conditions. It is not possible to state where acupuncture as a treatment first originated as it was within the cultures of Egypt and India at the same time as being 'discovered'. As a treatment it is has now gained acknowledgment in the Western World.
Many people consider that it is a 'new' treatment in the West and that it has only been recently introduced into European countries. This is far from the truth as acupuncture was known in Europe in the 17th Century and was recommended by eminent doctors in America at the beginning of this Century.
During the course of its development many attempts have been made to explain how it works. The traditional explanations, based on Chinese philosophy, are not readily accepted in the West. Recent research in Modern Auricular Acupuncture is indicating more acceptable rationale.
Acupuncture as a true science, based on carefully recorded observations over a period of a thousand years. It is still an effective beneficial treatment form, in our changing environment today.
Traditionally, acupuncture has attempted to obtain a balance of the life energy (Qi or Chi) to promote health and prevent illness. The means of identifying, understanding and correcting imbalances are extremely subtle as practiced by traditional practitioners. Modern acupuncturists have the same objective, but have developed other means of diagnosis and treatments.
Research and development continue in Modern Acupuncture. As yet the reasons why it works are still not fully understood. But, the effectiveness of the diagnosis and treatment applied by a qualified practitioner, is apparent to countless recipients. The acupuncture points are electrically different from other areas of skin and this can be demonstrated with Modern Acupuncture both on the body and in the auricle (ear). Acupuncture affords relief and benefits many conditions, but has its limitations, as any other branch of medicine has its limitations. The acceptance of acupuncture in the past has been hindered by nonsensical claims as to its effectiveness.
