Modern Auricular Acupuncture The practice of auricular acupuncture has changed significantly in recent years. Trained practitioners are now able to treat a wide range of conditions effectively and economically.
What is Modern Auricular Acupuncture ?
It is a form of diagnosis and acupuncture treatment utilised via the auricles (ears). Auriculotherapy is not TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) as most people are lead to believe, most types of acupuncture origins can also be found within other cultures such as Indian, Egyptian, during the 5th century BC Hippocrates used the ear for therapeutic purposes, so it is not exclusively 'Chinese' as some practitioners would have you believe.
Modern auricular acupuncture is a form of (ear acupuncture), not taught within TCM as its origins as you will read below are 'Western' and not Eastern from the research and findings of Nogier and Kropej The Nogier and Kropej mappings and findings are not taught within TCM as a main diagnoses / treatment but more of an adjunct from and to TCM teaching. Hence, people will find major differences between the diagrams of the cartography of the auricles between TCM and Modern Acupuncture.
The discovery of auricular diagnosis by Dr. Nogier started in 1951. Many countries and in particular China started to adopt his system of diagnosis and methods of treatment. His work and books have been translated into at least several languages, he was the first to "coin" the phrase 'Man in the Ear', the title of his first book, followed by another classic Auriculomedicine.
Xiao Shaolin translated and introduced the discoveries of Paul Nogier, a French doctor of medicine, in December 1958. It says: "The auricle is not simply a piece of uneven cartilage. It has a close connection with the internal organs. When an internal organ has disorder, a corresponding reaction will emerge in the auricle." Nogier put forward a map of auricular points, on which the distribution of the auricular points, for the first time, was regarded as, "an inverted projection of an embryo."
Nogier has also written many articles on the above subjects. After approximately 15 years of research Nogier had "re-mapped" the cartography of the auricle (ear), as it had never been mapped out before, with the utilisation of medical terminology with reference to the auricular points.
He also found that certain 'zones / areas' of the auricle related to certain frequency windows, with reference to treatment of the points in these 7 zone areas, further research within auriculomedicine revealed that the auricles could be used to diagnose the 'laterality of the brain' of a person.
Interestingly TCM have bastardised his techniques and substituted there own, in a number of ways. Rather like trying to 'muddy; the waters.
So the next time you read about Auricular Acupuncture think of Nogier and Kropej not the Chinese.
The ESMA continues to develop courses which reflect the highest standards of practice in Modern Acupuncture. It also fosters the development of new techniques and equipment in order to promote the effectiveness of this powerful form of treatment.
Courses have been carefully designed to enable students to reach high standards in the most cost effective means currently available. The theoretical, practical and clinical aspects are taught on a number of weekend modules. These modules are so designed that students are quickly introduced to practical work at an appropriate level from the outset.
The clinical examination and treatment of patients is introduced under supervision, once the basic theoretical concepts and practical concepts have been mastered.
Course tutors are experienced Modern Acupuncture practitioners with other skills like Osteomyology and have formal teaching qualifications. NVQ assessments can be arranged if required, but these will be at extra costs to the students.
Students who successfully pass the course examinations are eligible to apply for membership and registration of
ICM / BRCP Modern Acupuncture Division
All prospective students should have a thorough understanding of the principles of Anatomy and Physiology.
The main venue for the Modern Auricular Acupuncture Course is in Merseyside area. Other venues can be arranged provided there are sufficient numbers of applicants.
